Since the first weeks were offered for sale in the French Alps in the early 1960s, timeshare ownership has become the hottest growing vacation option in the world with double digit yearly sales since the early 1990s. There are over 6 million owners at more than 5300 resorts worldwide. In the USA alone, 4.7 million households have an interest in timeshare property.

In the 1980s, many owners were compelled to sell their weeks but to no avail. Developers were not interested in pre-owned properties, having their own inventories to market. Also, advertising companies and real estate companies that now specialize in timeshare resales had not yet come into existence.
